Buzzards Bay NEP GPRA Map
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is required to comply with the Government Performance Results Act of 1993 (GPRA) and measure performance or progress toward the agency’s goals. As part of this effort, since 2001, NEPs report to the U.S. EPA information on land and habitat protection and restoration projects they have supported. The U.S. EPA requires submission of this data using the National Estuary Program OnLine Reporting Tool (NEPORT). Municipalities, area lands trusts, and the Buzzards Bay Coalition are the lead entities for most land protection and habitat restoration projects in the Buzzards Bay watershed. The above interactive map shows all reported habitat protection and restoration projects between 2006 and 2022 where the Buzzards Bay NEP provided some level of technical or financial support. Our partners have undertaken many more habitat protection and restoration projects than those listed here. Zoom in and click on a dot for more information. The points are the geographic center of the parcel, and not necessarily the precise location of any restoration activity or protected area. This data, and the efforts of other National Estuary Programs are shown on this EPA NEP GPRA map.
The figure above summarizes acres of land protected or habitat restored where the Buzzards Bay NEP provided funding or technical support. Buzzards Bay municipalities, area lands trusts, and the Buzzards Bay Coalition are the primary leaders of efforts to protect or restore wetlands and other habitat in the Buzzards Bay watershed. In many instances, the Buzzards Bay Coalition was the actual project lead in developing grant applications and making presentations to town meetings and boards. The total open space in the Buzzards Bay watershed protected by these entities between 2019 and 2023 totaled 4,348 acres. The 1,903 acres where the Buzzards Bay NEP provided some form of technical or financial assistance total about 49% of the total parcel acreage permanently protected during the reporting periods.
